Hiring Process

Minimum Requirements

Applicants for original appointment to the Fire Department must also meet the following prerequisites on or before the date of the scheduled competitive examination:

  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age, but less than thirty-one (31) years of age.
  • Be able to read and write the English language.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.

Joining the Mansfield Fire Department involves several key steps to ensure candidates are ready for the demands of the job. Here’s what to expect:

  1. Application
    • Submit your application through the City of Mansfield’s Human Resources department before the posted deadline.
  2. Written Exam
    • Take a written civil service exam. A passing score is required to move forward in the process.
  3. Physical Agility Test
    • Complete a timed physical test that includes tasks similar to what firefighters do on the job.
  4. Background Check
    • We’ll review your work history, criminal record, driving record, and references.
  5. Polygraph Exam
    • A lie detector test is conducted as part of our integrity screening.
  6. Psychological Evaluation
    • You’ll meet with a licensed psychologist to ensure you’re mentally prepared for the job.
  7. Drug Screening
    • A drug test is required before continuing in the process.
  8. Medical Exam
    • A full physical exam is required as part of enrollment in the Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund.
  9. Final Interview
    • Candidates who complete all prior steps will participate in a final interview with fire department leadership before hiring decisions are made.

Working Hours:

  • Firefighters work 24 hours shifts, followed by 48 hours off
  • Our firefighters receive a “Kelly Day” every 3rd week to make a 48 hour work week.
  • 96 Hours of Vacation Time after 1 year.
  • 8 Paid Holidays.

Seniority/Longevity:

  • $100 Longevity pay per year of service
  • Additional vacation days:
    • Eight years but less than fifteen years: 144 Hours
    • Fifteen years but less than twenty years: 192 Hours
    • Twenty years or more: 240 Hours

Educational Incentive:

  • Paramedic School paid by the Department
  • Tuition Reimbursement including a Master’s Degree

Additional Compensations:

  • $1,500 Uniform Allowance
  • $750 Annual Paramedic Bonus
  • $500 Annual Certification Pay
